Recap 2025: The Joy is in the Journey of Growing Houseplants

This year, my love and excitement about houseplants began to take a new form, which has felt incredibly fulfilling and sparked a level of passion for growing houseplants that I haven’t had previously.

I spent a lot of time in the past trying to learn about and take in how vast and amazing the world of plants is. I wanted to experience and collect as many different plants as possible.

Then my home became a cluttered jungle that was too unmanageable for me to keep up with, and I realized I needed to reduce my collection to a manageable number. That was 2 years ago.

In many ways, I am still downsizing, but a new wave of the houseplant hobby has emerged from it. The thing that hooked me into becoming a crazy plant person (my love for nature and for having houseplants in my home) started to re-emerge with a deeper and wiser perspective.

That love had grown quieter in the clutter and chaos of collecting so many plants.

I remembered that the original purpose of having houseplants was to create a sanctuary within my home, bringing nature indoors, which grew and changed with me over time.

I started to appreciate the plants that had been with me the longest, not the newest and shiniest ones.

I began to focus on the craft and artistry of growing a plant indoors, and on the joy of consistently caring for it over time.

I remembered that the true joy of houseplants is in the journey of growing them, and when I get lost in the desire to acquire more and more plants, I miss out on their growth and on the time to care for them properly so they can flourish.

And wouldn’t you know, that is also true for me? The true joy in life is enjoying the present moment, consistently caring for myself and my family, and trying not to let life get so busy that I can’t do that.

Houseplants are so full of wisdom when I take the time to let them teach. 🙂 Happy New Year, everyone!

Striped Leaf Amaryllis – I’ve been growing this amaryllis as a houseplant for years because of its beautiful foliage, while hoping it would bloom one day, too. But it never has.

Then this year, it got thrips; so, I put it outside because Mother Nature is better at dealing with thrips than I am! The natural change in temperatures and environment induced blooming, and for the first time, I got to see its absolutely stunning flowers.

It’s such a work of art.
