Sometimes the dream you had when you bought a specific houseplant doesn’t play out the way you had hoped.
I’ve been there.
The plant gets pests over and over again.
Or it doesn’t grow well in your space.
Maybe it looks terrible, but it’s still technically alive.
You look at it and feel bad about how it is doing and about the vibe it brings to your space.
The thought of getting rid of it is uncomfortable because you spent money on it, and it’s a living thing.
I’m here to tell you it’s okay to let it go.
Your mental health and physical surroundings are worth more than the money you spent.
If you feel down every time you look at it, that plant is costing you far more than its monetary value.
Growing houseplants, like any hobby, can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be super negative.
We get to decide how much we are willing to tolerate.
I recently let go of two large trees because they were almost always infested with spider mites, and I was tired of battling them.
I stopped noticing the beauty of the trees and began to see them as a burden.
I didn’t want to get too close because I knew when I did, I would find the inevitable hitchhikers.
Then it dawned on me that I didn’t have to continue on like this anymore, and I didn’t want to. The personal toll or cost was too high.
It was okay to give myself the out.
It is okay to give yourself the out.
So, if you need one: Use this as your permission slip to be gentle with yourself, let go of what doesn’t serve you, and keep only what brings you joy.
You’re worth it.
